The main indicator is better performance on the same task. With the exercise, range of motion, technique, and effort kept similar, four changes are useful:

What the evidence shows: in an eight-week randomized study of 43 trained lifters, progressively increasing either load or reps produced similar muscular adaptations for most lower-body measures; load progression slightly favored the squat 1RM. Both methods are therefore valid, but they do not measure exactly the same quality.

How Do You Make Two Workouts Truly Comparable?
A data point is interpretable only when the task remains consistent enough. In your workout log, check the following before drawing a conclusion:
- the same exercise, variation, and setup;
- a comparable range of motion and rep speed ;
- a similar position in the workout and a similar rest period;
- the same rep range and a similar RIR;
- no unusual circumstance that explains the performance on its own.
RIR provides context, but not an exact measurement. In a study of 141 lifters, the prediction error for remaining reps ranged from about 2.6 to 3.4 reps depending on the exercise and tended to decrease with experience. Use RIR as a consistently applied scale, not as a precise decimal.
How Many Workouts Should You Compare Before Drawing a Conclusion?
Practical guideline: review at least three comparable exposures before calling something progress, a plateau, or a regression. This is not a universal scientific threshold; it mainly prevents one unusually good or poor workout from deciding for you.

A direct 1RM test is generally reliable, but it is not perfectly identical from one day to the next. A systematic review of 32 studies and 1,595 participants reported a median coefficient of variation of 4.2% between tests. This figure should not become an automatic threshold for your e1RM; it simply shows that a very small isolated difference may reflect measurement variability.
How Do You Use e1RM to Track Strength?

The calculations are exact for the formula, but e1RM remains an estimate. Always use the same formula, exercise, and sufficiently demanding sets with a similar RIR. A meta-regression of 952 tests, 7,289 people, and 269 studies showed that the number of reps possible at the same percentage of 1RM varies by exercise: participants completed more reps on the leg press than on the bench press. Do not compare e1RM values from two different movements.
Does Better Performance Prove Muscle Growth?
No. An increase in load or reps can come from several adaptations: more muscle, better technique, more efficient coordination, or greater familiarity with the exercise. Performance shows that you are improving at the task; it does not measure hypertrophy directly.
For a physique goal, complement your log with photos taken under the same conditions and, if useful, body measurements collected in the same way. Compare them across several weeks, never after a single workout. What depends on the trainee: the pace of visual changes, lighting, body weight, and each person’s distribution of muscle mass.
What Should You Do When Progress Rises, Stalls, or Drops?
