A useful log should let you reconstruct the workout without relying on memory. For each exercise, record the following:

The date and exercise order belong to the workout. Keep warm-up sets separate so your weekly training volume does not combine warm-ups with genuinely productive work.

Why should you record the exercise variation and setup?

The same exercise name can hide different executions. Changing bench angle, seat height, grip width, range of motion, or repetition speed changes the performance being measured. An increase in load is therefore comparable only when the exercise remains consistent enough.

Record only the settings that genuinely affect your position: seat notch, bench angle, handle, machine assistance, or an intentionally limited range of motion. You can then find the matching variation in the ShapeVision exercise library.

Should you record RIR for every set?

RIR is the number of additional reps you believe you could complete before failure. Two ten-rep sets with the same load are not the same performance if the first ends at 3 RIR and the second at 0 RIR.

Start by recording the RIR of your final working set. If effort differs substantially between sets, record it for each one. The estimate is not perfect; it becomes most useful when you apply the same scale for several weeks. The guide to RIR and muscular failure explains how to calibrate it.

How do you identify progress in your workout log?

Compare the same exercise under similar conditions. Here is a simple progression across three workouts with a target range of 8 to 10 reps:

The third workout shows more reps with more in reserve, so the progress is clear. By contrast, adding one rep by moving from 3 RIR to failure is not enough to prove that you became stronger. This interpretation complements progressive overload.

What should you record at the end of the workout?

Add two brief details: the approximate duration and an overall effort score from 1 to 10. You can also note unusual context—poor sleep, an interrupted exercise, or unavailable equipment—when it explains a different result.

These subjective notes provide context; they do not diagnose recovery from a single day. Their value appears when they are recorded repeatedly and compared with actual performance trends.

How often should you review your workout log?

Review the previous result before starting an exercise, then examine the full trend every three to four weeks. A single workout can vary with sleep, stress, equipment, or exercise order.

  1. Check whether reps or load increase at a comparable RIR.
  2. Check that technique and setup remain consistent.
  3. See whether several exercises for the same muscle progress or stall together.
  4. Then change only one variable: load, reps, sets, or exercise.

Which mistakes make a workout log unusable?

  • recording only the total weight lifted without each set;
  • changing variations without updating the exercise name;
  • forgetting machine settings;
  • counting partial reps as regular reps;
  • recording RIR after good sets but ignoring it after poor ones;
  • changing several variables at once and then trying to identify which one worked.

Your log should remain quick enough to complete during the workout. If a data point never changes a decision, you probably do not need to enter it every day.

Should you record every warm-up set?

No. Record or time rest when it varies substantially or when you need a precise comparison between two results. An approximately consistent duration is enough otherwise.

Should you record RIR after every set?
