What differs between pull-ups and lat pulldowns?

In pull-ups, your hands stay on a fixed bar while your body rises. In a lat pulldown, you remain seated and pull a handle attached to an adjustable load. Both are vertical pulls, but support, trunk stabilization, and load adjustment differ.

A single-session study of 41 young adults measured activity in four muscles during pull-ups and three pulldown or assisted variants. The patterns were not identical. Electrical activity in one session cannot by itself predict long-term muscle growth.

A lifter chooses between a pull-up bar and a cable lat pulldown
The better choice depends on your target movement and the quality of the sets you can perform.

Which exercise fits your goal?

  • Goal: achieve your first pull-up or do more pull-ups. Keep a pull-up variant in your plan, using enough assistance for controlled repetitions.
  • Goal: train your back with easily adjustable resistance. Lat pulldowns let you select the load and change it in small increments.
  • You can already perform clean pull-ups. Keep them first and add lat pulldowns if you want more pulling sets without cutting the range of motion short.

This is a practical guide, not a proven hypertrophy ranking. In an eight-week trial involving male students with limited pull-up ability, two lat pulldown programs increased pull-up repetitions. The study did not compare those programs with pull-up training or measure muscle growth.

How do you make sets comparable?

For pull-ups, record reps, assistance or added weight, and keep grip and range of motion consistent. For lat pulldowns, record the displayed load, handle, seat setting, and reps. The machine number is not an exact equivalent of the load moved in a pull-up: compare each exercise with its own past sessions.

Practical example: moving from 3 sets of 6 clean pull-ups to 3 sets of 8 at the same range of motion and assistance is measurable progress. If you change machine or variant, establish a new baseline instead of immediately interpreting the load difference.

Which execution cues should you keep?

Start with extended arms in a comfortable range, then drive the elbows down without swinging your torso. End the rep before you lose control of the lowering phase. An extremely wide grip is unnecessary: choose a width that lets your shoulders and elbows move comfortably.

The cited studies examine muscle activity during one session and transfer from eight weeks of pulldown training to pull-ups. They do not establish which variant maximizes back hypertrophy.

Frequently asked questions

Can lat pulldowns help with a first pull-up?

It can build pulling strength and is easy to adjust. To learn the pull-up itself, also practice assisted reps or another progression on the bar.

Should you do both in one workout?

Only if your total workload and time call for it. Put the priority movement first; the other can add controlled sets. Two variants are not automatically better than one you track well.
